Park City Contemporary Project

Another example of transforming a seemingly simple straight stair into a work of art. We had the pleasure of collaborating with the client on design early in the process, even before architect plans were complete. While there are similarities to a previous project we’ve done, this stair has some unique features. Namely the open mono stringer…which isn’t really “mono” but actually double 1″ thick steel plate stringers cut in a “stepped” pattern and set close together to mimic a mono stringer. The purpose behind this was to allow you to look through the stringer as you climb the stair, adding to a light open contemporary feel. Stepping the stringer is a unique feature that adds complexity and interest to the design. Another distinguishing feature are the horizontal Brass “bones” set in among the vertical gun blued steel rods. They serve to stiffen and tie the steel rods together as well as add an artistic flare as they can be set in innumerable patterns. The 1/2″ round steel rods which pass cleanly through the European White Oak block treads attach to a steel plate in the ceiling and are tensioned there. Each rod is also attached to the tread internally, this adds additional stiffness and stability to the stair while maintaining the clean crisp look this design calls for. In all it makes for a beautiful point of interest in the entryway of this stunning Park City home!
